Murray cruises into French Open quarters

Murray cruises into French Open quarters

Last year's runner-up put forth his second consecutive brilliant performance on Monday in Paris, dropping just seven second-serve points in a decisive 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over first-rime Grand Slam quarterfinalist Karen Khachanov.

Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares suffered a disappointing loss to Santiago Gonzalez and Donald Young in the quarter-finals of the men's doubles at the French Open.

Top seed Andy Murray gave Karen Khachanov a two-hour tennis lesson in the French Open fourth round on Monday before predicting a top-20 place for the rising Russian this year.

Stan Wawrinka, the third seed, booked a place in the quarter-finals for the fourth time with a comfortable 7-5, 7-6, 6-2 win over Gael Monfils, the last French player in the men's draw.

When he was interviewed on court at the end of the match, Murray wanted to talk about the terrorist attack in London at the weekend and other recent incidents.

"There was a awful tragedy in London, also in Manchester only a few weeks ago", he said during his post-match interview. "(I have) come a long way the last ten days or so".

"It is something which has affected large parts of Europe and all over the world. I am grateful that I can still perform in front of everyone", he added.

With Murray leading 3-2 Khachanov turned up the power a notch to retrieve the break, only for the Scot to respond in kind in the following game.

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic reached her first French Open quarterfinal by coming back to edge 97th-ranked Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

"I just try to find myself into this zone where I don't do much unforced errors", the Ukrainian said, "and still play aggressive".

Read on for a breakdown of Monday's action from the 2017 French Open, complete with highlights of the day's best moments and discussion of the latest results from Roland Garros.

The eighth-seeded Nishikori will face the world No. 1 at Roland Garros tomorrow.

The world number one headed to Roland Garros struggling for form and fitness, suffering disappointing early exits in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome during the clay-court season. Cilic reached his first quarterfinal here after South African Kevin Anderson was forced to retire while trailing 6-3, 3-0.

Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, will next face either third-seeded Stan Wawrinka or No. 15 Gael Monfils.

Murray followed up his impressive third-round win over Juan Martin del Potro with another display that suggests he is a real contender in Paris.

In the second set, when I lost serve, I think he came up with some good returns and played some good stuff.
