Trump will not block ex-FBI chief Comey's testimony - White House

Trump will not block ex-FBI chief Comey's testimony - White House

President Trump would like a "thorough investigation of the facts" when former FBI Director James Comey testifies on Thursday among the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Investigations into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion with Trump campaign aides are ongoing.

Comey is set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday in a hearing that will likely shed light on his conversations and interactions with Trump.

Yet Trump may have weakened that argument by publicly disclosing elements of his conversations with Comey, including during an interview in May with NBC News and via Twitter, where the president said on May 12, "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" "But once Comey left office and signaled a willingness to testify, this ceased to be about separation of powers". In any case, Trump will spend the day of Comey's testimony tweeting out lame insults and insane conspiracy theories.

Following Comey's firing last month, it was reported that he'd written memos about all of his meetings with Trump - and that during one, the president asked the FBI to drop its investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

While Trump and his aides initially said he had acted at the recommendation of the deputy attorney general because of the way Comey handled last year's investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, Trump later said he had already made a decision to fire the FBI director regardless of any recommendations and that he had the Russian Federation investigation in mind.

Trump Won't Block James Comey's Testimony Before Congress

Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, said he expected Comey's testimony would not be his last before Congress.

So pivotal is Comey's appearance to the Russian Federation drama that there has been intense speculation about whether Trump will seek to invoke executive privilege to block the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief's appearance and to keep their conversations private.

It would also move 30,000 government workers into the private sector and was billed by the White House as a first step towards fulfilling Mr Trump's...

Should Comey deliver devastating testimony on any of those questions that suggests Trump obstructed justice, he will significantly worsen the political challenges facing the President.

"I think that the president is often very effective in driving our message in Congress", said Short, who argued that the president won the election because he was "not a conformist candidate" and voters were anxious for change in Washington.
