Eight killed, thousands displaced as storm lashes South Africa's Cape

It is confirmed that an elderly man died earlier today when a wall collapsed onto his wendy house, while four others passed away in a fire on Simonsvlei Farm in the Drakenstein Municipality.

While one single storm will not end drought conditions, any rainfall is welcomed as two dams in the region had completely dried up in May, according to the BBC.

South African media are reporting that five people have been killed in a storm that swept into the area around Cape Town, which has been suffering a severe drought.

He added that many people had been injured by flying debris.

Western Cape Disaster Management urged residents to remain indoors as the storm - the worst in the province in 30 years - was expected to increase in severity. "Investigations [are] under way to see how [we can] capture urban storm water at a greater scale and then store it for later treatment and use".

As a result of the severe warning issued by the weather service, the Western Cape Education Department has taken the decision to close schools in the area on Wednesday "in the interest of learner and educator safety".

Heavy rain and flash flooding are expected in places over the western parts of the Western Cape, areas such as the Cape Metropole, Cape Winelands and Overberg on Wednesday into Thursday morning, it said.
