Intelligence Officials: No Pressure To Intervene In Investigations

Trump supporters may have been satisfied with the answers, but some lawmakers were not.

Two US intelligence agency chiefs refused to say on the record Wednesday whether President Donald Trump asked them to downplay investigations into whether there was collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign previous year. The interaction with Coats indicates that Trump aimed to enlist top officials to have Comey curtail the bureau's probe.

But even just talking to them about the FBI investigation would still be inappropriate, according to current and former intelligence officials. "I have never been directed to do anything I believe to be illegal, immoral or unethical", he said.

All four witnesses either said they don't take notes or declined to address the question.

WARNER: But have - in your course prior to the incident that we're going to discuss, was it in any regular course where a president would ask you to comment or intervene in any ongoing FBI investigation?

I will be asking DNI Coats and NSA Director Rogers about those reports today.

DNI spokesman Brian Hale said in advance of the hearing, "Director Coats does not discuss his private conversations with the President".

"In my time of service", Coats said, "I have never been pressured, I've never felt pressure to intervene or interfere, in any way, with shaping intelligence in a political way".

A spokesman for Pompeo declined to comment on the closed-door discussions.

She said the White House had not yet received any follow-up requests regarding the testimony of Coats or Rogers.

He will have limited power to influence the agency's Russian Federation investigation, which was placed in the hands of an independent prosecutor - former FBI director Robert Mueller - following Comey's dismissal.

The incidents suggest that Trump may not have appreciated the traditional barriers meant to insulate the intelligence agencies from politics.

McCabe: I think I'll let Director Comey speak for himself tomorrow before this committee.

Coats said that it "remains infeasible" to determine exactly how often US persons' communications are collected under 702.

The president has repeatedly called for an end to the various inquires swirling around his administration.

Coats again stayed mum Wednesday when he was asked by Sen.

He asked Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats if he would interview with Comey to kill the investigation.

To the extreme frustration of senators on both sides of the aisle, Coats and Rogers refused to share details. It authorizes law enforcement and the Intelligence Community to collect intelligence on non-U.S. persons outside the USA, where there is a reasonable suspicion they seek to do us harm.

Trump's surrogates may have said earlier this week that the President will not block Comey from testifying by claiming executive privilege.

The White House backed away from the idea of naming Feinberg after Coats and members of the intelligence community and Congress raised objections.

Warner said he was "disappointed" in the answer. Rosenstein later appointed Mueller to act as special counsel and take over the FBI's probe of Russian interference in last fall's presidential election. Under questioning by Sen.
