Leaked NSA doc highlights deep flaws in US election system

Leaked NSA doc highlights deep flaws in US election system

According to a report by The Classified National Agency, at least one U.S. voting software was attacked by Russian hackers days before last year's presidential election.

In Florida, voter registration data and the software used to count votes are on two separate electronic systems, as Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Mike Ertel emphasized on his Facebook page.

"Our IT team prioritizes security", said County Recorder Adrian Fontes in the press release.

Bruce Schneier, chief technology officer of IBM Resilient and a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, said the report shows the weaknesses of U.S. election systems.

The office receives roughly 3,500 phishing or spam emails each day. "There was no evidence that we were hacked or anything like that". Anyone can get them by simply asking their local elections office. "However, due to the sensitive nature of the discussions we can not comment further".

The U.S. elections system is a patchwork of more than 3,000 jurisdictions overseen by the states with nearly no federal oversight or standards.

Russia's military intelligence agency launched an attack days before the November 8, 2016 General Election on a Florida-based company that provides election services and systems, including voter registration, according to a leaked NSA report. "All this craziness has happened all of a sudden", said Nichols. If it had not been leaked, the public would still have nearly no inkling about how diligently Russian hackers worked to penetrate United States voting systems in the view of the U.S. intelligence community.

But she cautioned that the attempted hack, while hitting close to home, did not have any impact on the ballot counting or vote tabulating. The NSA memo notes that it is unknown whether these phishing emails successfully compromised any of the target emails.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, denied the hacking and phishing allegations Tuesday, saying the Kremlin did not see "any evidence to prove this information is true".

Current and former county election officials in all six in counties, with knowledge of work surrounding the 2016 election, all told CBS4 Tuesday they do not believe they received the corrupt email and none of the officials believe the company VR Systems alerted them to any potential problems.

"It just wasn't consistent with something VR Systems would normally send out".

That would include voters' addresses, signatures, social security numbers, and drivers license numbers, Edwards said. None of its tabulation software is connected to the internet.

"In no way did this have any effect on the counting of the ballots", she said.

The Department of Homeland Security knew in September that hackers believed to be Russian agents had targeted the voter registration systems of more than 20 states.

The government report doesn't directly name the company, but it does reference the vendor VR Systems numerous times, and the company has since responded publicly after the leaked NSA report was made public.

"VR [Systems] seemed to think that very few of their customers received the phishing emails", Sanders said.

The attempt involved sending an email with a Microsoft Word attachment containing malware that would give hackers control of infected computers, the Intercept reported. We are only aware of a handful of our customers who actually received the fraudulent email and of those, we have no indication that any of them clicked on the attachment or were compromised as a result.

The company added that it had policies and procedures in place to protect their customers. Snipes said the company immediately identified the problem when contacted.

Election supervisors in Citrus, Clay and Pasco counties said they, too, got the emails, but also did not open them, the Tampa Bay Times reported Tuesday. "It does upset me", she said.

"In no way could that have caused any type of interference or insecurity or issue with a voting system", said Chambless.
