Apple wants to control your music, and home

Apple will later this year release a "HomePod" music-centric smart home speaker, challenging a market now dominated by Amazon and Google in its latest move to weave deeper into people's lives. Focusing on audio quality underscores Apple's strengths in music, and could set it apart from the pack for consumers looking for a reason to buy a home hub. Siri will be voice activated to respond to requests for information and other help around the house. Daryanani said Apple may also announce an iPad Pro with a faster processor in an attempt to revive its long-slumping tablet sales. It's getting more features in iOS 11 and it's getting its very own speaker - the HomePod. Amazon sells the main version of the Echo for $180; Google's Home speaker goes for $130.

If Apple unveils a rival to internet-connected speakers from Amazon and Google, it wouldn't be the first time that Apple hops on the bandwagon of a technology product popularized by a competitor.

Apple will begin shipping the HomePod to the United States, Britain and Australia in December. Apple executives demonstrated the use of Macs to produce VR experiences, though they didn't immediately talk about making a headset to view them.

On Sunday night, Pacific Crest Securities became the latest firm to downgrade Apple's stock, citing unease about whether it can continue to deliver more value than its peers. But at the same time, the HomePod still looks to be Apple's way to crack into the home assistant market while avoiding the logjam of new entries from companies like Microsoft and Essential. These devices will only keep the most recent messages in local storage. Although the format is not exclusive to Apple, it's not yet clear how well the photos will work with non-Apple software and devices, which mostly use JPEG. The Apple Watch is the company's most innovative product of the past few years, and its growth has been steady but slow.

Apple also may introduce its next Mac computer, along with the next operating system powering the machine.

More news: Edelman and Patriots close to an agreement on a contract extension

Apple says its Safari browser will try to guard your privacy by identifying and blocking data files that track you as you move from website to website.

Siri will be paying more attention to what you do on your iPhone. It will block videos that start playing automatically, for instance, and can also prevent ads from following and profiling users.

Expect a new Siri face that will proactively give you information, a flashlight that can be used as a safety light if you're running at night, and new high intensity interval training workouts, among other features. It will also be possible to exchange data between gym equipment and the watch.

Recode had first reported that Amazon and Apple were nearing an agreement to bring Amazon's app to Apple TV, and BuzzFeed later confirmed the news.
