Edelman and Patriots close to an agreement on a contract extension

Edelman and Patriots close to an agreement on a contract extension

Super Bowl LI hero and New England Patriots slot receiver Julian Edelman was entering the final year of his four-year contract with New England this upcoming season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news.

Edelman, 31, led New England's receiving corps with a career-high 1,106 receiving yards in 2016, and has quickly become one of Tom Brady's favorite targets alongside tight end Rob Gronkowski. While helping pave the way to yet another title, he caught 98 passes for 1,106 yards and three touchdowns this past season. The contract extension likely will be signed in the next day or two, according to the report. He also made a key catch in the Super Bowl that helped the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons. Say he gets injured this season, his stock would drop considerably, as who would want to pay a 32-year-old free agent receiver coming off an injury who is already injury-prone as it is?

Edelman was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Kent State where he played quarterback.

Edelman also holds the Patriots record for most punt returns for a touchdown, with four. Edelman is assured of a spot in the Patriots 53-man roster while Amendola and Hawkins are expected to battle for the last berth.
