Bill Maher Has Superficial Debate About 'N***a' After Controversy

Bill Maher Has Superficial Debate About 'N***a' After Controversy

But the rapper also made it clear that, for him at least, there are still lines men like Maher aren't allowed to cross: "It's like a knife, man".

One week after Bill Maher used a racial slur during an on-air interview, the "Real Time" host reflected on his comments on his HBO show Friday night. Ben Sasse told Maher that he is welcome in the state and that "we'd love to have you work in the fields with us".

In the past, Maher has argued that "nigger" (or "nigga") is no longer offensive, given the fact that the word has been reclaimed as a term of endearment by black people, especially in hip-hop music.

Still, Maher suggested that such mistakes shouldn't mean the end of a person's career.

"We need to get to the root of the psyche", he continued.

Professor Dyson made the point that the comedian is not a racist ... that it's just another example of "white privilege".

Maher responded, "I just don't want to pretend this is more of a race thing than a comedian thing".

"I know white boys like that who earn a pass from the work they put in", the text from Dyson's son read. If it brought back pain to people then that's why I apologised freely and I reiterated it tonight, ' he added.

The NWA founding member reaffirmed earlier in the week that he'd be appearing on the show despite Maher's remarks, promising that he wouldn't back down. "I like your show", he told Maher.

Other guests on Friday's show included rapper and actor Ice Cube, with the roundtable consisting of David Gregory, former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.), and activist Symone Sanders.

As Cube explains, it's a word that has been used as a weapon in the past, saying "It's like a knife" and it can't be allowed to be used like that again. But apologizing for using a racial slur was appropriate because "for black folks, that word - I don't care who you are - has caused pain". You got a lot of black jokes. Because I think it's a lot of guys out there, who cross the line "cause they a little too familiar or they think they too familiar". You can use a weapon or you can use it as a tool. Now I know you heard, it's in the lexicon, everybody's talking.

We knew he was going to take it there, and he did.
