Russian Federation says US-led coalition colludes with ISIS in Syria

Russian Federation says US-led coalition colludes with ISIS in Syria

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said the SDF now controlled around two-thirds of Al Meshleb and was some 400 metres from the neighbouring Al Senaa district.

Its regional spokesman David Swanson said as many as 100,000 people "may stay trapped" inside during the assault.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of Kurdish and Arab fighters, breached the outer city limits of Raqqa, seizing a 1,000-year-old fortress in the west and a neighbourhood on the eastern side of the city, two days after announcing the start of the offensive.

Separately, the Russian military accused the USA -led coalition of providing safe corridors for IS fighters to leave the area around Raqqa in an effort to prevent Syrian government forces taking territory. "It raises a question why they do it and what their real goals are". He urged all parties to give safe passage to those who want to leave.

"The SDF captured the western half of the Al-Sabahiya neighbourhood and are reinforcing their positions there", Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

US-backed fighters gained ground against Daesh (the so-called IS) group in the streets of Raqa on Wednesday, a day after their months-long offensive finally broke into the militants' Syrian bastion. On Thursday, the USA shot down an armed drone it said had attacked its units embedded with local opposition forces in the region.

ISIS militants have been retreating from Raqqa's outskirts in the face of advances by the SDF, Reuters reported Thursday.

A Pentagon spokesman, Eric Pahon, said "hundreds" of USA military personnel were taking part in the Raqa offensive.

An estimated 300,000 civilians were believed to have been living under ISIS rule in Raqqa, including 80,000 displaced from other parts of Syria.

Several hundred thousand civilians still live in the city.

He said that Syrian government troops had secured territorial gains in the southern Suwayda province near the Jordanian border, but encountered resistance from the US -led coalition.

Many have described harrowing journeys as they fled Raqqa city, with ISIS fighters targeting them as they tried to escape.

Elsewhere in Syria, a USA warplane shot down a pro-regime drone on Thursday night near the Jordanian border in the latest incident in escalating tensions in the country's south.

Tensions around At-Tanaf have surged as pro-regime forces, including Iranian-backed militias, look to expand their influence.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a group of Kurdish and Arab militias supported by a USA -led coalition, began to attack Raqqa on Tuesday after a months-long campaign to cut it off.
