President Trump calls United Kingdom election results 'surprising'

President Trump calls United Kingdom election results 'surprising'

But Britain's Saturday newspapers agreed she is just clinging on.

May is under pressure after the Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority in the election on Thursday [Friday NZ Time]. This morning, two of May's closest advisers were forced to resign.

Florence Faucher, a professor at the Center for European Studies at Sciences Po, told Sputnik that May might be replaced as a negotiator in the talks on United Kingdom withdrawal from the European Union. I reached him via Skype.

It said the campaign failed to get "Theresa's positive plan for the future across" or "notice the surge in Labour support, because modern campaigning techniques require ever-narrower targeting of specific voters, and we were not talking to the people who made a decision to vote for Labour".

He also said that the Prime Minister was risking "Tony Blair and Gordon Brown's greatest achievement, which is peace in Northern Ireland".

The Labour party, along with Momentum, the grassroots organisation of Corbyn supporters, galvanised the party's 500,000 strong members into taking to the streets, the phones and the internet to campaign for Labour. UKIP leader Paul Nuttall resigned after just six months in the job, following his party's dismal performance. At the start of the campaign, she was enjoying poll leads of 20 points or more over the main opposition Labour Party. And the goal of its campaign seemed to be not to get close even to winning the election but simply to avoid some sort of complete wipeout.

A party councillor in Ballymena reportedly claimed Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,500 people in the United States, was God's revenge for New Orleans hosting an annual gay pride event.

With 649 of 650 seats in the House of Commons declared, the Conservatives had 318 - short of the 326 they needed for an outright majority.

One protester held up a homemade cardboard sign which read "queers fight back". From whom? From her party? "That's not a matter for me", she said. We should remember this was, as you said at the beginning, a snap election. Theresa May called the election to strengthen her hand, she failed. It was three years before the next scheduled election, and the conservatives already had a secure, if small, majority.

To Theresa May's credit, she has stated that she believes no deal is better than a bad deal. Will the Democratic Unionists get something for their pains?

"We do not know if the new government sticks to the same line as Theresa May, or the support she will have in the new government", De Marcilly said. Meanwhile the SNP lost 21 seats, winning 35 seats and the Liberal Democrats, Democratic Unionist Party (#Dup) and Sinn Fein all increased the number of seats to 12 (+3), 10 (+2) and 7 (+3) respectively. Their support base is overwhelmingly amongst Protestants who live in Northern Ireland, and it's the largest single political party in Northern Ireland.

Many members of the party are also in favor of capital punishment.

Northern Ireland's people voted in favour of remaining inside the European Union in last year's referendum, going against the national trend in favour of Brexit.

The DUP, which won 10 seats, said it is ready to talk with May about supporting her government, although such an alliance would be far from straight forward.

MARTIN: Well, so clearly there's a lot to talk about.

Brexit negotiations are due to begin on Monday June 19, and Theresa May has maintained that the talks will go ahead as planned despite the political turmoil. So what happens now?

MARTIN: That's Roger Scully.

SCULLY: Thanks very much, Michel.
