Sessions to Testify in Public Hearing on Tuesday

Sessions to Testify in Public Hearing on Tuesday

Though we may not learn a lot about the Russian Federation investigation, we will be able to better assess Sessions' survival by the end of the day.

A DOJ statement said Sessions wanted the hearing to be public because "he believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him and looks forward to answering the committee's questions tomorrow".

The Attorney General has been under fire for his involvement with the Russians.

The eyes of Washington turn again to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, where embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions faces questions over his Russian Federation contacts and role in the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

It comes as political intrigue pulses through the U.S. capital following explosive testimony by Comey before the same panel last week, and as Trump has expressed frustrations with Sessions, one of his earliest high-profile campaign backers.

Durbin also said he's hoping to hear more about Michael Flynn's resignation as President Trump's national security advisor, and whether Sessions truly offered the president his resignation in recent weeks, as multiple published reports have indicated.

Comey's remarks drew an angry response from the president on Friday accusing Comey of lying.

One of the key unanswered questions in the Russia investigation is what, exactly, Mr. Trump's people talked about with Russian officials. Comey said in testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week. The committee shortly after said the hearing would be open. Trump has denied that he said that.

Whether executive privilege is invoked "depends on the scope of the questions", White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters Monday. Trump's personal lawyer also challenged Comey's account, saying the president never asked for the investigation to be dropped.

At the conclusion of a February 14 meeting, Comey testified, Trump urged everyone else but Comey to leave the Oval Office, including Sessions.

Sessions initially was scheduled to appear at a hearing about the Justice Department's budget on Tuesday morning.

Pressure mounted at the start of the week following reports that Sessions offered his resignation to Trump because the President blamed Sessions for exacerbating his Russian Federation problems by recusing himself from the probe. Comey was leading that probe.

Trump has denied he tried to interfere with the probe. In his testimony, Comey said he had asked Sessions not to leave him alone with Trump following meetings where he said Trump had asked Comey for his loyalty. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, urging him to investigate possible obstruction of justice by Trump in Grassley's position as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Like many top US officials did last week, Sessions is expected to claim executive privilege, insisting that it would not be appropriate to publicly discuss private talks he had with the president. Levine added that Sessions is "expected to cite executive privilege" as his basis for refusing to answer those questions - meaning the attorney general will claim that his conversations with Trump are legally protected from disclosure in public.

Sessions is prepared to make clear that there was no "third meeting" with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at the Mayflower Hotel, the source said, pushing back on reports that Sessions could have met with Kislyak at an April 2016 Trump campaign event they both attended at the hotel. It was later revealed that he met with Kislyak on at least two occasions - encounters that Sessions differentiated by portraying them as coming in the course of his duties as a senator, not within his role in the Trump campaign. Comey declined to elaborate in an open setting.
