Tightening Cuba restrictions, Trump again chips away at Obama's legacy

Tightening Cuba restrictions, Trump again chips away at Obama's legacy

Instead, Central American leaders will see their spotlight dimmed by America's spotlight thief-in-chief, President Trump, who's set to swoop in to Miami tomorrow to announce his long-awaited changes to Cuba policy.

"The President has made clear that he will look toward repressive regimes in this hemisphere... the Cuba policy needs to change", a senior administration official said.

Trump has been personally invested in this process, multiple aides said, adding that the President deeply believes that the changes Obama announced in 2014 were a "bad deal for the United States and a bad deal for the Cuban people".

Former President Barack Obama may have begun normalizing relations with Cuba, but President Donald Trump will be re-tightening regulations regarding travel.

John Kavulich, president of the independent US-Cuba Trade and Economic Council, warned that nearly all US business in Cuba would be shut down if Trump imposed a ban on dealings with Gaesa, the economic wing of the country's military government that controls 60% of the island's economy, including state-owned hotels, restaurants, banks and gas stations.

Normalized trade with Cuba could add $1 billion in sales for US farmers, the USDA said previous year. Any new prohibitions should prohibit US investments and business partnerships with the Cuban military and security services - including Cuban companies owned by the military - under existing general license authorizations enacted as part of the Obama administration's unwinding.

About 4 million visitors traveled to Cuba previous year, including 614,000 Americans and Cuban Americans, a 34 percent increase over 2015, Cuban tourism ministry data shows. The rules also require a daylong schedule of activities created to expose the travelers to ordinary Cubans.

Embassies in Washington and in Havana will remain open, sources tell CNN, and Cuban American travel and remittances remain unaffected. The venue is named after a leader of the failed USA -backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961 against Fidel Castro's revolutionary government.

Regarding the situation after the announcement, Williams noted that Engage Cuba would analyze the concrete regulations to be adopted in places like the Departments of the Treasury and of Commerce, and it will try to incorporate experts to those negotiations so that the criteria of those involved can be heard.

Gary Prevost, a professor emeritus at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, talked about what that would mean for Cuba and for the U.S.

Critics say Obama didn't exact concessions from the Cuban government on human rights and democratic reforms.

Advocates say this will help Cuba in bringing the improvements in human rights in more than 50 years. It spent subsequent decades trying to either overthrow the Cuban government or isolate the island, including toughening an economic embargo first imposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Much of Trump's policy appears based on S.1489, a bill proposed by Sen. Rather, it is the smart use of US economic power to continue to put pressure on the Castro regime for its continued human-rights abuses, even as Americans interact directly with the Cuban people. Marco Rubio, considered a key participant in the decision-making.

Record remittances from the U.S.to Cuba are opening up other new economic opportunities for ordinary citizens.

The White House has not yet released details of Trump's "recalibration" of USA policy towards Cuba, but the president is widely expected to fulfil a pledge made on a campaign visit to Miami in September to follow a harder line to put pressure on Havana over human rights. He said he would "stand with the Cuban people in their fight against communist oppression", and went on to win about half the Cuban vote in Florida in the presidential election.

The figure, reported Tuesday by Cuba's ambassador to Washington, Jose Ramon Cabanas, is equal to the total US visitor arrivals in all of 2016. Trump is also likely to announce restrictions on travel between the two countries, threatening the daily flights between Florida and Havana.
