Turkish president slams USA charges for guards

The U.S. State Department said it is committed to holding those responsible for the violence accountable. Sinan Narin, of Virginia was arrested in Virginia and charged with aggravated assault.

Mr Erdogan's security personnel returned to Turkey with him so it is unclear if they will face arrest. Members of the security team face several felony and misdemeanor counts.

Turkey's US embassy alleged the demonstrators were associated with the PKK, which has waged a three-decade-long insurgency against Turkey and is considered a terrorist group by the United States.

Washington police chief Peter Newsham, though, said peaceful protesters were "attacked for no reason". Erdogan's security forcibly removed a number of protesters from a venue in Ecuador in February, 2016.

Warrants were also issued for two Canadians and two Americans. Police are expected to release photos of the other 8 possible suspects and appeal to the public for information on their identities, the official said. Voice of America's Turkish service released video showing the Turkish president observing from inside a vehicle while the Turkish security team clashed with the protesters.

He said the U.S. State Department would handle any further action regarding execution of the arrest warrants. "We support them, we make sure that they are safe, but we also make sure that they follow our law", Bowser said at a press conference. Eleven people, including a police officer, were hurt in the brawl.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", said Senator John McCain, chair of the Senate armed services committee.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will fight U.S. arrest warrants for his security team over a brawl last month in Washington.

Likewise, the US Ambassador to Turkey was summoned before Turkish officials who objected to the way the situation was handled.

Erdogan said the protesters were members of an outlawed Kurdish militant group and the USA police failed to act. Video of the melee appears to show Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's bodyguards punching and kicking Armenian and Kurdish protesters who oppose the president.

The incident comes amid increasingly strained tensions between the US and Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally that has grown more authoritarian in recent years under Erdo─čan's leadership and drawn criticism from prominent USA politicians.

Police in Washington, DC announced Thursday they had brought charges and issued warrants against a dozen Turkish security officials involved in the outbreak of violence.

This isn't the first time Turkish security officials have faced scrutiny for getting physical with protesters. Men in dark suits and others were recorded repeatedly kicking one woman as she lay curled on the pavement. Some Turkish citizens and the head of the president's security detail stepped in.
