Oregon Won't Make Drivers Pick Gender for Licenses

Oregon Won't Make Drivers Pick Gender for Licenses

Thursday's move isn't the only one in OR granting rights to transgender people with regard to identification documents.

OR has become the first state to legally recognise non-binary people. Shupe plans to apply for a non-binary driver's license on July 3, alongside his wife.

"It's exciting to see Oregon's Department of Motor Vehicles adopt this change".

The decision in OR comes a year after a Portland circuit court judge granted a request by Shupe to change gender from female to a third, non-gender option.

As MRCTV previously reported, government officials in OR were recently debating whether to allow people who identify as genderqueer OR non-binary to put an "X" on their driver's licenses instead of the standard "M" for male and "F" for female. And while there aren't statistics to show just how many Oregonians identify as nonbinary, on a national level, more than a third of transgender people say they're nonbinary.

"This change in ID is a huge piece of validation for me", J Gibbons, a 26-year-old non-binary Portland resident said to The Guardian.

Right in the middle of Pride month, OR just made a huge move to support non-binary people.

While new to the United States, non-binary gender markers are not new-other cultures and other countries have recognized non-binary genders for many years, including Canada, India, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand and Nepal.

Activists hope an "X" gender designation is on the way in other states, and eventually, for US passports. "I was assigned male at birth due to biology", Shupe, 52, who prefers to be called "Jamie" rather than using any pronoun, told Oregon Live at the time.

In late May, California senators passed a bill to add a third gender option on state IDs-suggesting that more change may be forthcoming. It's awaiting a vote in the House.

That 2016 ruling prompted state officials to examine how to allow a third option in the state's computer systems and how such a change would interact with the state's gender laws.

"While we don't expect any travel issues, this is the first in the USA, so it's new territory for the whole country", House said. While Shupe is excited to finally get an ID card that reflects their gender change, Shupe isn't so sure the federal government will be as progressive as the Western states.
