White House denies Trump wants Mueller out, but heat's on

White House denies Trump wants Mueller out, but heat's on

Yet that tweet contradicts what Gingrich tweeted just less than a month ago, saying, "Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel".

"I'm not going to follow any orders unless I believe that those are lawful and appropriate orders", Mr. Rosenstein said, adding: "If there were good cause, I would consider. If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me no matter what anybody says", explained Rosenstein.

But Sanders would not say whether Trump had confidence in Mueller amid news reports that the president was considering whether to fire him from the post. In fact, the chain of command for the special counsel is only directly to the Attorney General or in this case the Acting Attorney General.

This is true for reasons similar to those that prompted Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the same investigation.

Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein was praised for the Mueller appointment.

Rosenstein also said that having made political contributions "is not a disqualification" from working for the special counsel leading the Russian Federation investigation. The White House clarification has come amidst reports that Trump is contemplating firing Mueller.

"Think he's considering, perhaps terminating the special counsel".

"I know what we're investigating and (Sessions) does not", Rosenstein said, trying to clarify Sessions' role.

Rosenstein is scheduled to testify today before both Senate and House subcommittees regarding the Justice Department's budget, and he is likely to be questioned about Mueller's status. Apparently many within the party now want Mueller ousted as the special counsel for the investigation, mostly because rumors are swirling that Trump wants Mueller fired - or at least that it would be in his best interest to do so.

When asked about the issue by the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sessions deferred to the President's account.

Rosenstein said "no, I have not", when asked by Sen.

US President Donald Trump was reportedly considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller from Russian Federation probe, even though he legally can't.

Fleischer and Gingrich had previously vouched for the character and integrity of Mueller, who was appointed Federal Bureau of Investigation director by Bush and whose term was extended an extra two years by Democratic President Barack Obama.

Some of President Donald Trump's closest allies - including one of his sons - have begun questioning whether Mueller's wide-ranging probe is becoming too political, as the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election intensifies.

Should Mueller get fired, that would be a waste of time, according to Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee. "And I'm not going to speculate on what he will or will not do", Sekulow said.

In an interview on CNN's "New Day", Ruddy said, "I think it is a consideration the President has had because Mueller is illegitimate as special counsel". In what became known as the Saturday Night Massacre, President Richard Nixon ordered then-Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Cox. Ruddy did not immediately respond to questions seeking clarification.

It wasn't clear whether Ruddy, who speaks with the president often, was basing his remarks on a specific conversation with the president or entirely on Sekulow's comments.
