New York City subway train derails, 34 injured

Two cars on a southbound A train derailed at the West 125th Street station and hit a wall around 9:45 a.m. after its emergency brakes unexpectedly deployed, the MTA said.

Passengers on one train tell WABC that it felt like it jumped off the tracks at around 125th Street.

The impact of the derailment rippled through the line, stalling another 800 riders on nearby trains between the 110th Street (Cathedral Parkway) and 135th Street stations.

The New York City subway system has been hampered by aging infrastructure (leading to signal failures and power outages) and equipment, as well as surging numbers of riders for years, but the rush-hour delays have been especially ludicrous this summer.

An FDNY spokesperson said there have been reports of smoke and a possible derailment, while confirming at least three people have been injured. Frustrated commuters who were stuck on other trains shared their anger on Twitter. There were 34 minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, according to the New York Times, and 17 were taken to nearby hospitals.

Officials say the derailed train is in the process of being removed from the track.

"We had no idea where the smoke was coming from", Danny said.

'The brakes went into emergency and we need to determine why'.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed that a train derailed and seven people suffered from non-life-threatening injuries. Initially people panicked a little bit then and we realized we had to move.

The accident was stopped several trains, of which carried out the evacuation of passengers.

Williams said one woman walked out of the station with soot all over her hands.

"It is my expectation that with new leadership brought by Joe Lhota, the MTA will address the fundamental issues plaguing the transit system and overhaul the organizational structure of the MTA", the Democratic governor said.

The number of subway delays have tripled in the past five years, to 70,000 per month.

The MTA's Long Island Railroad is also having trouble.
