Hyperloop One shows first 'Full Systems Test', unveils first 'pod'

As well as revealing the completed test, the company has also shared images of the new pods (above) that'll house passengers as they whiz through the tubes (via The Verge).

Hyperloop One, co-founded by venture capitalist Shervin Pishevar, is one of the first successful attempts at turning Musk's advanced, hi-tech concept into a real-world transport system.

The first test of the Hyperloop was done in the Nevada desert, and Missouri is one of 35 finalists for the new high-tech transportation system called a Hyperloop. Watch the video of the first Hyperloop test run below.

It might not seem like much on the surface, but Hyperloop is hailing its 70 miles per hour, 315-foot test run as a "Kitty Hawk moment". The sled was able to magnetically levitate on the track for 5.3 seconds and "reached almost 2Gs of acceleration", according to the company.

The test sled utilized magnetic levitation and was propelled by electrical charges, coasting through the Hyperloop tube for 5.3 seconds.

The goal of this first test was not to achieve record-breaking speeds, but to simulate the conditions of an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet. Hyperloop's first trial was successful in demonstrating that the same effect could be achieved using vacuum tubes. Musk said he didn't have time to see the idea to fruition, but SpaceX has hosted ongoing competitions for student and professional teams to show off pod design and execution.

Hyperloop One says the system offers better safety than passenger jets, lower build and maintenance costs than high-speed trains, and energy usage, per person, that is similar to a bicycle.

The aerodynamic pod is 8.5 metres long, and constructed of structural aluminum and carbon fiber. Musk didn't have the bandwidth to take on the project - apparently getting the world off fossil fuels and colonizing Mars is time consuming - but he thought it'd be a faster and cheaper alternative to California's high-speed rail project. "Ever since we started the company three years ago, we've been aimed at this moment, the instant when we achieve controlled propulsion and levitation of a Hyperloop One vehicle in a vacuum environment", reads the post. Its created to carry both cargo and human passengers, Hyperloop One says.

Hyperloop One seems to have generated the most hype so far though.
