Children forced to fight alongside Islamic State — Philippine military

Children forced to fight alongside Islamic State — Philippine military

In May, Maute attacked the city of Marawi, setting fire to Christian buildings and taking hostages at the cathedral.

Wednesday when an FA50 aircraft dropped bombs on terrorist lairs in the war-torn city. Fighting has also claimed the lives of 45 civilians. Seized Maute Group firearms are placed at 461 and rescued civilians at 1,723.

Joint Task Force Marawi Spokesperson Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera said the airstrike accident will be investigated by the military.

The two FA-50s were conducting missions to destroy Maute Group positions in Marawi City when one of its bombs landed 250 meters short of the intended target.

"Large debris from heavily reinforced buildings accidentally hit two of our personnel who [died] in the process", Arevalo added. The injured soldiers are now out of danger and on the road to recovery.

Despite the incident, Padilla highlighted the accuracy of the newly acquired aircraft.

A similar incident occurred on May 31, but the plane that was used was a SF260. The military said 11 soldiers sustained minor wounds. Following an internal inquiry, the SF260 cleared for employment.

"So, hoping to make that as a six-months to one-year transition dwelling for numerous residents until such time that the areas that they used to live will have been reconstructed and rehabilitated", said Padilla.

"This [recent] incident that happened, the bomb did not hit our men, it hit an area proximate to where they were, which caused the collapse of the building", Padilla said.

"They were allegedly wearing orange garb suits, and if that is any indication, they were civilians that were killed earlier during the start of the fighting [and] executed by these terrorists", Brigadier General Restituto Padilla was quoted as saying by GMA Network.

The Defense chief described the urban warfare in Marawi City as similar to the Middle East offensives in Mosul, Fallujah and Raqqa.

The Indian embassy also released a press statement expressing the solidarity of her people with the Filipino people in their fight against terrorism and offered assistance to support the rehabilitation of the embattled city that caused the displacement of more than 200,000 residents.

Before the latest report came in, Arevalo said the number of casualty in the ongoing Marawi conflict has reached 379 extremists killed, 89 security forces and 39 civilians.

"We continuously get disturbing narratives from [escaped residents] that children as well as hostages are being employed in the firefight", Brig.

Part of the assessment is whether all persons included in two arrest orders issued by Lorenzana have been arrested.

The prelates also wondered whether martial law across the southern part of the country would ensure the return of peace.

"[The assessment] is now being finished".

The Armed Forces earlier said they are still pursuing around 80 to 100 rebels holed up in the city's business district.

More than 400,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the siege, the biggest political crisis to confront Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte since he took office 12 months ago.
