European Parliament hosts intercultural film festival

Wednesday 13th of February 2008
Brussels, Feb 13, EuAsiaNews -- Within the framework of the European Year of Intercultural dialogue, which has sparked numerous culture-related projects and activities to take place in 2008, the European Parliament (EP) is hosting from Wedensday in Brussels a film festival on the theme of intercultural dialogue.

This is an initiative of the European Union National Institutes for Culture, based in Brussels. It aims during 2008 to show cinematographic works in all EU member states.

The festival opened with the screening of the Slovenian film "Express express" .

EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering said that while the "Parliament encourages and supports projects of civil society which contribute to a dialogue between cultures", he was glad that EUNIC chose the film medium to "explore the possibilities of intercultural dialogue".

In order to animate a debate after the screening of the films during the festival, directors and actors will be invited to participate in a debate with spectators.

The British entry "Bend it like Beckham", is a film produced in 2002 by Indian-born writer/director Gurinder Chadha.

This is a film punctuated with lots of humour, and set in multicultural London.

It follows the dreams of a young Sikh girl from an orthodox family who is more keen on football than on cooking and pursuing a career in law.
