There have been no reported cases of Zika virus disease transmitted by mosquitoes in Texas, but Texas is on alert for the possibility of local transmission. The virus can cause Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults and children and can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly.
Meanwhile, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said that since February 1, 2016, Zika virus infection and the related clusters of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders have constituted a "public health emergency of worldwide concern (PHEIC)".
But it isn't as widely found in the Palmetto State as the Aedes albopictus mosquito, a cousin that also can carry Zika virus.
According to the CDC, most people infected with Zika will have no or mild symptoms.
The most recent infection was in a resident who was likely exposed while traveling in Mexico. "Everyone in the Cayman Islands has to do their part in helping to reduce the population of this mosquito and thus the spread of the Zika virus". It said some people who are infected do not have any symptoms.
Yellow fever and Asian tiger mosquitoes are not dependent on standing water to breed, unlike the mosquito that transmits West Nile virus, Jared Dever, spokesman for Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District, has said. The case will be classified as "travel-associated" and is being investigated for more details.

Not all counties, however, are prepared for the threat of Zika virus.
