England won their opening World Cup 2018 qualifier 1-0 thanks to an injury-time victor from Liverpool's Adam Lallana.
"It was a bit of misunderstanding after the last game, when Sam came out and said I play where I want", Rooney said at a prematch news conference ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Malta.
"I'm sure the instructions from Gareth, whether it's to play or not to play, are instructions I will carry out to the best of my ability".
