'National celebration' as final Hip concert tonight

If you missed your chance to see Gord Downie and the rest of The Tragically Hip in Calgary earlier this month, there is another chance to see them for the band's final show on Saturday.

The final concert will be broadcast commercial-free on CBC, which many cable customers in Western New York get at home as part of their cable package.

The countdown is on as audiences in Canada and around the world prepare to come together to celebrate The Tragically Hip with CBC on Saturday, August 20, when the legendary Canadian rockers return to their hometown for the Kingston, Ontario stop of their Man Machine Poem tour.

The concert has been a fast sell-out across the country with word that singer Gord Downie has incurable brain cancer.

Tickets for the "Man Machine Poem" tour sold out nearly immediately after they went on sale in June - leaving many fans disappointed they'd miss a final chance to see the Hip live.

Super fan Stephen Dame, who runs the Hip resource website A Museum After Dark, said fans should be satisfied just seeing the Hip in concert.

Countless bars and restaurants will be showing the CBC broadcast in its entirely, while a long list of independent movie houses and some cinemas at large theatre chains are hosting screenings.

"Our goal is to bring the experience.to as many Canadians as we can", she said.

"We've been going non-stop from the moment we set up", said T-shirt salesperson Jill Gerat.

It's hardly a shock the Hip's latest album got the most attention on the tour.

After the show, Londoners will be able to record 30-second messages and post them online for the band. "I figured it was a crappy little bar band or something".
