Jason Garrett refuses to rule Tony Romo out for the opener, but the Cowboys head coach does acknowledge that the quarterback is now in a back brace.
But that's more wishful thinking as even Garrett acknowledged that the Cowboys expect Romo back "during the season", making rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott the team's opening day starter.
"Right now we're going to take it day to day, week to week before we give the long-term prognosis", executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "Tony has a broken bone in his back".
"There is no reason for me to stand up here and put a timetable on this, " Garrett said Sunday, via the Dallas Morning News. "That's not the world we live in".

But with head coach Jason Garrett telling reporters that Romo is now wearing a back brace, the timetable doesn't appear to be any time soon. "I think the biggest thing for all of us is focus on doing our jobs".
The Cowboys will be left to make the decision on whether or not to save a roster spot on Romo, or to place the franchise on injured reserve, meaning he'd be out for a minimum eight regular season weeks.
Garrett said he has expressed his disappointment to Elliott, who has apologized for his actions. The Cowboys went 1-11 in games played without Romo previous year after he broke his left collarbone twice. It's a critical part to being a good football team in this league, to be able to handle the adversities over the course of the year.
The injury came on the third snap of the game against the Seahawks. The 6-foot-2, 238-pound quarterback has completed 39 of 50 passes for 454 yards and has thrown five touchdowns with no interceptions in three preseason games. After Romo's very visible pain on the field he shook it off and wanted to return to the game, but was taken out of the lineup for the rest of the game. After that, there was speculation that he would not play in the team's final preseason game.
