Jesse Wimberly of Mandeville says that the bus driver apparently was hired by the company that owned the bus.
Officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have issued a detainer for the driver, an undocumented 37-year-old old man named Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez, after he was charged with negligent homicide, negligent injuring, reckless operation and driving without a license.
There were 35-40 people on the charter bus who were also transported to local hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. They say he doesn't have a driver's license and is in the US illegally.
Matey says the firetruck was blocking traffic from the scene of an earlier crash.
Authorities identified the bus company that was used as AM Party Bus and Kristina's Transportation LLC.
The bus then struck a pickup truck before hitting three firefighters who were by the guardrail, sending them 30-40 feet over the edge of the interstate into the water below.
St. John the Baptist Parish Fire Chief Spencer Chauvin, 36, died, and a passenger in another auto that was also struck was killed, Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Melissa Matey said.

Other injuries - including the Titan's two occupants, who suffered minor injuries in the original crash - ranged from minor to moderate, Matey said. The St. John the Baptist Parish Office of Fire Services had been on the scene dealing with a motor vehicle accident involving a truck crash when Denis Rodriguez plowed into the cordoned off area of the highway, the NY Daily News reports.

Matey tells local news media that the dead included a local fire chief and the injured included the 30 to 40 people on the bus.
