Aerial spraying, naled helped curb Zika in Miami — CDC

"We also follow the state of Florida Department of Health recommendations". An arts district north of downtown Miami, Wynwood became the first area in the continental United States with mosquito transmissions of the virus that can cause awful birth defects. He lifted the ban on Monday saying the area has gone more than a month without active transmissions. The agency said credit goes to the aerial spraying of the controversial pesticide naled, along with use of a larvicide that uses mosquito-killing bacteria. The CDC's travel advisory remains in effect for the state's other active zone of transmission, Miami Beach.

Local transmission has not been detected in Tarrant County and surveillance continues.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday that it had purchased about $2.5 million in laboratory resources to expand access to Zika testing and reduce wait times for results in several states, including Florida, where Gov. Rick Scott has repeatedly accused the federal government of failing to meet the state's needs.

With a $1.9 billion request for funds to battle Zika virus still languishing in Congress, 7 months after President Obama requested it on the advice of health experts and public health officials, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has now had to tap funds earmarked to fight cancer and other chronic illnesses. The response team tested mosquitos in the area and offered door-to-door testing along with interviewing neighbors to see if anyone had traveled or had symptoms, according to the CDC report. Carried by the same mosquitoes responsible for dengue, Zika virus is more risky for it is known to causing birth defects like microcephaly when a pregnant woman is infected, resulting to having a child with head and brain smaller than normal. Like the Zika cases in Arizona today, Lopez said all the dengue fever cases in 2014 were assumed to be travel-related.

These cases included: 43 locally transmitted mosquito-borne cases in Florida, 26 cases believed to be the result of sexual transmission, and one case that was the result of laboratory exposure, the agency said.

On Monday, after an aggressive mosquito control campaign and three mosquito incubation periods have elapsed with no new cases in Wynwood, the CDC has taken Wynwood off its list of no-go places for pregnant women, though it does still advise them to "consider postponing nonessential travel" to Wynwood (along with the rest of Miami-Dade country). He asked people not to let their guards down just yet as there could be a possibility of ongoing infection.

Meanwhile, just six miles away in Miami Beach, the CDC has tripled the Zika virus transmission zone. No new cases have been reported in Wynwood since early August. This week, Wynwood met the CDC's requirement for being declared Zika free: no new cases reported for 45 days. But the CDC took a much more cautious tone than Scott did.

Statewide, there has been one other Miami-related Zika case in a total of 180 cases.

The procedure Garry and his colleagues want to develop will look for antibodies because, Garry said, they stay in the body longer, especially in urine.
