Wenger: Almunia has Arsenal future

It has been claimed that the Spanish goalkeeper will be on his way out of the Emirates Stadium in January, with a return to his homeland widely touted. Speculation regarding his future has emerged in the wake of a number of assured displays from the Gunners’ back-up shot-stoppers.

Lukasz Fabianski has become a regular in the side as Almunia has struggled with injury, while Wojciech Szczesny was handed a Premier League debut in the club’s last run-out against Manchester United. Wenger, though, insists a lack of action for his most experienced keeper should not be taken as a sign that he is on his way towards the exits.

Quite Surprising

“We need three goalkeepers of top level,” said the Frenchman. “For example, on Monday night we had Wojciech make his debut in the Premier League and we had Fabianski on the bench. If something happens to one keeper you need three world-class goalkeepers.

“I can’t talk about the future of players who are on long-term contracts. “I am surprised that every time a player has to fight for his position that you think straight away that he has to leave, that is quite surprising to me. It is part of our job.”
