WhatsApp To Begin Sharing User Information With Facebook

WhatsApp To Begin Sharing User Information With Facebook

Phone numbers, for example, will be connected with Facebook's systems and used for targeted ads and friend suggestions, but would not be shared or sold to advertisers, WhatsApp said.

You could soon be receiving WhatsApp messages from businesses and firms after the messaging app announced a changing of its privacy policy - the first change to its privacy policy since the company was bought by Facebook in 2014.

"Existing users who accept our updated Terms and Privacy Policy will have an additional 30 days to make this choice by going to Settings Account".

"While WhatsApp will continue to operate as a separate service from Facebook, we plan to begin sharing some information that will allow us to coordinate more in the months ahead and improve experiences across services".

In a new blog post, WhatsApp explains that it will share some users' phone numbers with Facebook, along with various metrics that could potentially help Facebook deliver more relevant ads to its registered users.

The first update to its smallprint in four years sees WhatsApp move to monetise its one billion-strong userbase, after Facebook paid £11.2 billion for the company in 2014.

While the update noted that WhatsApp does "not want you to have a spammy experience", a number of users took to social media sites like Twitter to complain about the upcoming changes. WhatsApp's commitment to user privacy has even brought it into conflict with law enforcement, with a Brazilian court temporarily banning the app in July for refusing to hand over messages (it argued it couldn't if it wanted to). "We don't know your home address".

"Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible", the privacy policy read. Interestingly, WhatsApp will now start to share its user data with parent company Facebook.

"As part of the Facebook family of companies, WhatsApp receives information from, and shares information with, this family of companies". But you'll be able to opt out and stop WhatsApp from sharing any of your info with Facebook.

The changes to privacy policies at WhatsApp, often hailed as one of the most private messaging apps, are already raising concerns among privacy advocacy groups. Then scroll to the bottom and toggle the control.

Interestingly, Facebook Messenger is also making a business play with chat bots, a contrast to WhatsApp's more basic push on the market.
