Ghana to experience partial solar eclipse today

Central Africa along with island of Madagascar will be able to see annular solar eclipse, today.

Tourists visiting Africa are set to view a big ring of fire made up by annular solar eclipse, that will dominate the wildlife parks and other tourist hotspots in southern highlands of Tanzania Thursday afternoon. Solar eclipse in turn has three types: total, annular and partial.

To avoid nasty conditions like permanent eye damage and blindness, you should probably sport some protective eyewear (something a little more substantial than sunglasses) such as eclipse glasses.

In a total eclipse the Moon's path carries it directly in front of the Sun, where it blocks out all of the light and leaves nothing but the faint white ring of the Sun's corona.

Even for observers gazing up at a partial eclipse under cloudy skies, the view was spectacular. The eclipse happened when the moon passed directly between Earth and the sun. Greatest eclipse occurs at 09:06:54 UT, which is just under five-and-a-half days before lunar apogee, which is the Moon's furthest point from us in its orbit.

The eclipse then moves off over Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo, arriving in Tanzania at 08:35 UT over Lake Tanganyika; by this time the duration of the annular phase will be up to 3 minutes and 4 seconds.

Rabiu advised members of the public in the cities mentioned not to view the annular eclipse with naked eye.

The partial eclipse was expected to start at 10:00am and will last for almost four hours. When the moon's shadow crosses the sun but its center doesn't align exactly with the center of the sun, it's known as a partial solar eclipse - when the moon sits either a little too high or too low to totally cover the sun.

Tour operators, airline agents, hotel owners and others have been selling their packages to tourists, astronomical and sky scientists said to be seeking opportunity to observe this rare moment that a person can see once in a lifetime. But if you're awake at 2:30 am and need something sublime and lovely to lull you back to sleep, I suggest you check out this live stream via Slooh, an astronomy outreach website.

Viewers can ask questions and interact with the host and guests during Thursday's eclipse show by tweeting @Slooh or by joining the http://www.slooh.com.
