Aerial spraying for Zika virus begins in Miami Beach

The discovery in August led the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to include a section of Miami Beach in a travel warning issued for pregnant women.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Naled is an insecticide that has been registered since 1959 for use in the United States.

Officials said the mosquito sample was taken from the same small area in Miami Beach where it was announced September 1 that three other samples had tested positive for the virus. The CDC insists it's safe, though protests by anxious residents forced the state to push back the originally scheduled spraying on Thursday by a day. They say the amount sprayed is about two tablespoons for an area about the size of a football field.

Friday's announcement from Scott's office came as the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said it had detected Zika in another mosquito sample in an area of Miami Beach. The county previously performed aerial spraying over Miami's Wynwood arts district, where health officials confirmed the first Zika infections acquired from mosquitoes in the continental U.S. For mosquito control, naled is applied as an ultra-low volume (ULV) spray.

Maloney joined local health experts at Orange County Community College, which is conducting mosquito surveillance for Orange County, to call for passage of $1.9 billion in emergency funding to combat Zika.

Naled is sprayed out in very fine droplets so it stays airborne. "Today's announcement reinforces the need for us to continue being as aggressive as we can be against Zika", Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine said in a statement. We will begin spraying on Friday around 5:00 a.m, weather permitting, and will spray this Sunday, and the following two weekends.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 25-year-old patient is the husband of a pregnant woman living in Johor Baru who also has the virus. Besides the 84 pregnant women testing positive for the Zika virus, Florida has 604 travel-related cases and 56 locally-transmitted cases of the virus.

The Department of Health yesterday disclosed that the sixth and latest Zika virus infection patient in the Philippines has fully recovered.
