South African rescue teams on September 12 pulled an injured man from an abandoned mine shaft where a number of illegal gold miners were trapped, highlighting the dangers of a shadowy activity that attracts unemployed people desperate to make a living.
This latest incident comes with Zimbabweans still having fresh memories of over twenty Zimbabweans who died in a similar incident in another SA mine in 2014.
At least seven illegal gold miners are dead and eight family members are trapped underground after they were poisoned by carbon monoxide in a disused mine outside Johannesburg.
Johannesburg Emergency Services (JEM) spokesman Synock Matobako says the trapped miners had all been part of their own rescue mission to retrieve the man who has died.
Having begun the rescue mission on Thursday, Matobako says JEM suspended the operation last night at around 7 o'clock because the high level of carbon monoxide in the mine is deemed too toxic and had thus become too risky for the rescuers.
One said in isiZulu: "They can not go in there with all that equipment, because those holes are very small where they are".
"So far we don't know how many people are trapped underground but we believe that we will be assisted by those illegal miners to determine if there are still people underground".
"We heard a lot of people underground". It was unclear how many were in this group.
The illegal miners are mainly unemployed migrants from neighboring countries.
