Matt Forte leads Jets over Buffalo

Matt Forte leads Jets over Buffalo

Ryan Fitzpatrick had to listen to the questions all week.

Buffalo has won the last five meetings against the Jets.

He was, with apologies to Tom Hanks, Sully on Thursday night.

In the first quarter, the Jets started the game with a long drive, which they went four-for-four on third down attempts.

The last time Fitzpatrick was here, in January, it was a nightmare. Manuel in the game - then didn't convert a fourth down run after the timeout.

All that became a distant memory on this night.

The New York Jets are being hit with the injury bug on Thursday night it seems. "I feel great about (Gilmore and Darby), we just had a tough day today". Marshall said he lost the feeling in his leg, so he hobbled to the locker room. Slowly. But about five minutes later he emerged. Soon, he was back in the game.

Smith, the NFL's all-time sack leader, is the second former Bills player to have his jersey retired following ex-quarterback Jim Kelly's No. 12. The Jets' secondary surrendered a long touchdown. The only bright side was safety Nickell Robey-Coleman returning Jalin Marshall's fumble 36 yards for a touchdown to briefly put the Bills ahead 24-20.

The Jets' defense did the rest.

The Bills tried to respond, but a drive near midfield stalled when Taylor under threw Sammy Watkins on a fade pass down the left sideline and it was intercepted by Marcus Williams.

Then, on fourth-and-inches with 7:03 remaining and the Jets leading 30-24, Sheldon Richardson and Darron Lee stopped LeSean McCoy for no gain on the Jets 45.

The Jets scored on all four of their first half possession and take 20-10 lead into halftime. The fans started heading for the exits.

It was the Jets' first win in Orchard Park since 2011.

The Jets, meanwhile, righted the ship just in time for a brutal four-game stretch in which they'll play four playoff teams from a year ago (the Chiefs, Steelers, Seahawks and Cardinals), with three of those games on the road.

Things weren't any better for Bills cornerbacks.

"I just wanted to think less - don't try to be ideal, don't try to diagnose everything that he's trying to do, and just play the game", Fitzpatrick said.

But what happened early in Thursday's game turned the whispers of Revis' potential decline into a loud roar. He didn't throw long all afternoon even though he's among the best deep-ball passers in the NFL. Forte put away his second touchdown on a three-yard scamper late in the third quarter. The Bills led 7-3 and the stadium shook with noise. But the message the duo sent was clear to anyone watching: This game meant a whole lot to the Jets.

There were more to come.

The Jets offense would finally be able to punch it into the endzone, as they scored touchdowns on their next two drives.

Marshall returned for the next series and made a 21-yard catch after having his knee examined.

One week after the Bills played terrific on defense, they couldn't have played much worse against the Jets. Suddenly, the Bills were back in the game, trailing only 20-17.
