Kerry said the United States government had "had conversations with all members of the region frankly about efforts they need to take against terrorism which comes out of their country", adding that he had personally raised the issue with Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
In an address to students of Delhi's Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kerry said that terror groups like Daesh, al-Qaeda, LeT and JeM can't be fought by a single nation alone.
In a meeting with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval earlier, Kerry discussed regional security challenges in South Asia, as well counter-terrorism efforts, said US State Department spokesman Mark Toner.
On Pakistan, Kerry said, it is clear that there is work to do for Pakistan to push harder against sanctuaries of terror. He said he had spoken to Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif about the need for his country to deprive any group of "sanctuary".
"It is clear that Pakistan has work to do in order to push harder against its indigenous groups that are engaged in terrorist activities".
Kerry also said that the U.S., India and Afghanistan would hold a trilateral meeting in the UN General Assembly session in September in which Indian investments in major Afghan infrastructure projects would be discussed.

Attacks by the Taliban on Afghan territory from across the border in Pakistan would also come up for discussion, he said.

The Afghan officials have always been criticizing Pakistan for allowing the Afghan group and the notorious Haqqani terrorist network to have leadership councils in its soil from where they plan and coordinate attacks in Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who co-chaired the round with US Secretary of State John Kerry, described it as "meeting of minds" on the issue of terrorism.
Kerry also hinted at some of the challenges impacting India's relationship with the US.
Kerry also cited cyber-security and energy as areas where both India and United States could expand cooperation.
