Green scores again, US settles for 1-1 draw vs New Zealand

It's the third goal in six caps for the 21-year old.

As he thrived in the club's development system, Green began to receive invitations from German youth national teams, playing for both the U-16 and U-17 sides in 2011. His participation in that tournament meant that he was provisionally "tied" to represent only Germany in global competition.

The New York Red Bulls midfielder had previously fallen out of favor with Klinsmann and did not appear for the USMNT from March 2014 until September 2016.

"We don't talk every day, but we're always in touch and I know that he's watching me", Green said. I was born in Florida and my father still lives there, so I have deep roots in the U.S. "And I think I did very well".

But a second-half goal from Monty Patterson secured a draw for the visitors, who like US are in World Cup qualifying action next month.

Preparing for next month's World Cup Qualifying which sees the US play Mexico on November 11 in Columbus, Ohio, the hosts were able to build a bit of chemistry with some new faces after the win at Cuba on Friday but ultimately came away with a poor result despite it meaning little.

With Gyasi Zardes recovering from a broken right foot, versatile veteran Fabian Johnson preferred at left back and Graham Zusi absent from this camp, Green may only find himself behind Christian Pulisic on the US depth chart for the left flank.

Green had put United States of America ahead and almost added a second goal in the 64th minute, but his shot from just outside the area sailed over.

Despite tying a team ranked in the 80s worldwide, Jurgen Klinsmann experimented with his squad and gave chances for fringe players to make an impression. Still young, he found it hard to gain playing time with the German giants and was sent out on loan to fellow Bundesliga club Hamburg at the start of 2015.

New Zealand had the US on the rack for much of the final 20 minutes, but could not find a victor, before the home team created a few late chances. The U.S.is coming off a 2-0 victory over Cuba last week. He should be included in the Hex squad for the first two matches, and might sneak his way into the starting lineup.

USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who made seven roster changes from the Cuba win in a bid to evaluate more players before qualifying begins, had a lineup with only six players having more than 30 caps. That was the goalheading into the two friendlies against Cuba and New Zealand, and a 1-1 draw against a determined New Zealand side is no reason to panic. Like Sacha Kljestan a month earlier, Green made the most of his chance, contributing to both goals in the MNT's 2-0 win against Cuba and scoring the lone marker in Tuesday's 1-1 draw against New Zealand.

But Klinsmann's staff continued to keep an eye on Green, whose goal as a 19-year-old against Belgium had made him the youngest player to score in the World Cup since Lionel Messi in 2006. The timing couldn't be better for him, with the massive World Cup qualifiers against Mexico and Costa Rica less than a month away.

Following the match, Klinsmann told a news conference: "Julian Green is back in the picture".
