Liverpool are considering an audacious bid to sign Sunderland and England striker Darren Bent. The 26-year-old has been the stand-out performer for the Black Cats over the past two seasons, scoring 24 goals in the 2009/10 season and nine goals so far in the current campaign. Meanwhile, Reds manager Roy Hodgson has made no secret of his desire to sign a striker to back up Fernando Torres, who has struggled for form and fitness this season while David N’gog has not impressed.

However, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is likely to resist any offer from the Merseyside club for his star striker despite Asamoah Gyan showing signs of being a top man at the Stadium of Light.

But Bent could well be tempted by the prospect of playing for a top club like Liverpool but their recent form may be a deal breaker for Hodgson.
