The Honda S Dream streamliner captured the FIA Category-A, Group-1, Class-4 record at the Bonneville Salt Flats following Bonneville Speed Week. The fastest speed ever recorded for a Honda in the flying mile was recently set at 261.875 miles per hour, and it was done using three-pot power. Instead, the S-Dream opted for a purposely built aerodynamic body that just nailed a FIA class record on the Bonneville Salt Flats by climbing to nearly 262 miles per hour (418.4 kph) in a vehicle equipped with a 660-cubic-centimeter turbocharged three cylinder. Even so, Honda says the S-Dream was already able to crack the official class record with a speed of 366.57km/h on the first day of the Bonneville Speed Weeks. The eventual record run surpassed the previous fastest Honda, which was a modified BAR Honda F1 auto that set its record in 2006.
That being said the engine used to power the S-Dream to its record wasn't just lifted straight out of an S660. The team have carefully re-investigated every part of the car's engine and renewed them which includes cylinder block, pistons, crankshaft, and valves. The project has been close the heart of sixteen R&D; people at Honda Japan and has been ongoing pretty much from the time the S660 was launched in Japan. Additionally, the lower block was replaced by one made of steel and the connecting rods were reinforced. This also makes it the fastest Honda-powered vehicle yet.
Furthermore it is unknown how much power Honda's 660cc Kei-Car engine is created to handle, considering that most production engines are tuned for longevity, reliability, drivability, and meeting emissions and efficiency requirements, rather than outright power.
