Stein argued that because the two major party candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, are historically disliked, she should be allowed a place in the presidential debates that would raise the Green party to the national stage. In Virginia's 2012 presidential general election, Johnson received 0.8 percent of the vote as the Libertarian nominee and Stein received 0.2 percent of the vote as the Green Party nominee.
