Tropical Storm Karl forms in far eastern Atlantic

Tropical Storm Karl forms in far eastern Atlantic

As of 5 a.m., Julia was centered about 60 miles south-southeast of Charleston.

Karl is moving toward the west near 13 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. There's now no threat to land. It is about 1,005 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Winds from Julia also downed some limbs and caused power outages on St. Simons Island, said Jay Wiggins, emergency management director for Glynn County. The center of Tropical Depression Julia was located near latitude 32.0 North, longitude 79.6 West.

This tropical storm still has a long way to go and is tasked with surviving moderate wind shear and dry air over the next few days. Hurricane center forecasters say Julia should maintain a "slow and erratic motion offshore" of SC over the next few days. This will keep SC precipitation free.

No watches or warnings have been issued with this storm, and forecasters say it will weaken over the next two days, with tropical convection possibly ceasing by day five.

More news: Tropical Storm Julia meanders on coast

Meanwhile Tropical Storm Ian races off into the northern Atlantic, while Tropical Storm Julia will hover offshore of the SC coastline through the weekend.

The WTOC forecast team will continue to monitor Tropical Depression Julia through the weekend. The weekend won't be a washout, but enhanced sea breeze storms could move soaking downpours through the area, especially in the afternoon. Coastal communities will see 2-4 inches of rain the next few days. First Alert Hurricane Center ** here **. The more shallow this system remains, the better chance it ends up farther west in the long run.

It will become a post-tropical low in about three days, its development hindered by a wind shear.

A weak area of low pressure has formed south of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
