Dustin Johnson wins PGA Tour player of the year

Dustin Johnson has been named the PGA Tour's player of the year after a sensational 2015-16 season in which he celebrated his breakthrough victory in a major championship.

Emiliano Grillo joined Jordan Spieth (2013) and Daniel Berger (2015) as the third member of the 2011 high school class to win PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

"His hard work on the golf course and in the gym paid off with the finest season of his career and the member vote reflects the respect his peers have for him", PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said. "I don't even know if I ever even dreamed that this would be happening, but obviously it was a great season".

Johnson won three times, including claiming his first major at Oakmont.

The closest competitors behind Johnson in the balloting were Jason Day, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy (who edged Johnson at the Tour Championship to win the FedEx Cup) and Henrik Stenson.

Johnson adds the honor, which comes with the Jack Nicklaus Trophy, to a growing list of awards for the recently completed campaign. Johnson also took home the Byron Nelson Award for Adjusted Scoring Average (69.172) and the Arnold Palmer Award as the TOUR's leading money-winner ($9,365,185).

The 32-year-old American has been one of the best players on the PGA Tour for almost a decade, ranking inside the top 20 on the money list each of the past eight years.

Since turning pro in 2008, Johnson, 32, has won every season on Tour, the longest active streak.

"I've got a lot of confidence in the game right now".
