Pakistan Sacrifices People Welfare to Expand Nuclear Weapons Stockpile
Despite floods, earthquakes, poverty, a dead economy and utter dependence on U.S., Saudi Arabian, Chinese and International aid money, Pakistan may soon overtake Britain to become the world’s fourth biggest nuclear weapon state. Surprising how a country fighting civil wars in NWFP and Balochistan and Taliban / Al Qaida in every province could manage to expand nuclear weapons capability. Could it be because of Chinese assistance?
Reports indicate Islamabad has crossed the 100 nuclear weapon mark. It has no plans to halt its fissile material programme. It cites India’s “freedom” to divert material from its unsafeguarded, military, reactors to produce nuclear weapons.
Pakistan is confusing nuclear weapons with conventional weapons and thinking that greater numbers equal greater security. Once a country has an effective second strike capability — the ability to respond to a nuclear attack by an adversary — numbers lose salience. There is no need for India to be perturbed.
An effective deterrent is all that we need. If Pakistan wants to waste treasure, effort and gain notoriety in the bargain, that is its sweet wish. No need to raise an undue alarm and certainly none to enter a nuclear arms race.
