Deutsche Bank To Fight US Justice Department's $14 Billion Settlement Demand

There, Deutsche Bank (DBK.XE) (DBK.XE) shares stumbled 8.7%, wiping off roughly EUR1.6 billion from the German lenders' market capitalization, according to FactSet data.

The German bank also on Thursday confirmed that it has started negotiations with the United States department of justice to settle the civil rights, which will raise the DoJ possibility of the issue and placement of mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) and related securitisation transactions by the bank between 2005 and 2007.

The Department of Justice didn't immediately respond to a request for comment outside of office hours.

"I don't share that assessment", she said.

However, the finance ministry said earlier on Friday: "The German government assumes that a fair result will be achieved on the basis of equal treatment".

In June, the International Monetary Fund described the bank as a "major systemic risk", leaving its chief executive John Cryan to strive to convince markets that Deutsche Bank was bound to recover. "While those views have been largely scaled back, central bank decisions will still be at the front and centre next week", Bernard Aw of IG said in a commentary.

Sept 16 Wall Street was near session lows late on Friday morning as Oracle led a decline in tech stocks and financials came under pressure in the wake of Deutsche Bank's mammoth $14 billion fine.

Deutsche Bank has no intent to settle these potential civil claims anywhere near the number cited.

Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, HSBC, UBS are some of the other names which settled previously. Shares slid almost 8 percent in Friday's session after news of the suggested settlement. Royal Bank of Scotland Group fell 32 cents, or 6 percent, to $4.84.

Can Deutsche afford the bill?

Allegedly, Justice has proposed that the company pay $14 billion in order to settle a series of investigations into how it misled investors about the quality and safety of mortgage-backed securities it sold prior to last decade's financial crisis. The settlement included an admission of wrongdoing.

Deutsche said the claim it was facing was in relation to its "issuance and underwriting of residential mortgage-backed securities" and related activities between 2005 and 2007.

Claims filed by individuals, companies and regulators against Deutsche, outlined in the bank's 2015 annual report, relate to mis-selling of subprime loans and manipulation of foreign exchange rates or gold and silver prices.
