Rescuers: 2 dead in Tel Aviv building collapse

Eleven more workers were injured including a 25 year-old with serious injuries and they were evacuated to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

The Israeli military has dispatched search and rescue teams in a bid to find at least five people missing, feared buried, at the scene.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the site Monday night to inspect the search operations.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, and several hours after the structure came down in a plume of dust, police said about four people were still missing and believed trapped under the debris.

"The people are doing exceptional work on the highest professional level to be found anywhere in the world", he said.

"There are still people trapped; we are making every effort and are not giving up on anyone". "We are very anxious if we will succeed in reaching those same people whose voices we can definitely hear". Complicating the rescue efforts is the fact that a large amount of sand that was placed on the structure's roof - for the objective of setting up a rooftop garden - covers much of the rubble.

After more than a decade in the planning, the project, which has involved boring tunnels through mountains and spanning bridges over deep valleys, promises to transform Israel's two largest cities, or at least bring them a little closer.

Israeli soldiers from the Home Front Command unit inspect the site of collapsed multilevel underground parking in Tel Aviv, Monday, Sept. 5, 2016. An accident three months ago occurred at the same site, according to Haaretz.
