General Motors is recalling millions of pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles it has sold recently in the USA because a software glitch can prevent the front airbags from deploying in a crash. GM said the sensing and diagnostic module in the vehicles, which controls airbag deployment, contains a defect that may prevent the inflation of front airbags in certain crash conditions.
The recalled cars are a 2014-2016 Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet SS, Chevrolet Spark EV.
2015-2017 model years Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado HD; GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra HD; Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
General Motors will notify customers and update the software for free, it has been reported.
The latest action is unrelated to the defective exploding Takata Corp. air-bag inflators, which has become the largest recall in US history.
More news: Bill Clinton to campaign in Orlando WednesdayThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall in a statement.
In a similar scenario in the past, General Motors had to recall some 2.6 million vehicles two and a half years ago. The company said the recall would not have a material impact on its financial results. GM's independent fund set up to compensate victims awarded $594.5 million and approved 124 death and 275 injury claims in connection with that recall. GM overhauled its approach to spotting defects and recalling cars after that controversy, leading to almost 30 million cars being recalled that year.
Of the 4.3 million recalled vehicles, 3.6 million are in the US.
GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said the automaker is still in discussion with NHTSA about the issue.
